ISL Director, Jim Hartman – Guest on the NC Manufacturing Extension Partnership podcast: “Clocking In – Voices of NC Manufacturing”

Categories: Uncategorized

The North Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NCMEP) provides manufacturing extension services that enhance the productivity, innovative capacity and technological performance of North Carolina based manufacturing firms. NCMEP also works to strengthen the global competitiveness of small- and medium-sized manufacturers.

The Industrial Solutions Laboratory (ISL) at UNC Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering is a NC MEP partner organization. In its partner role, ISL uses grant money provided by NC MEP to subsidize our senior design program costs, so that we can expand our participation to smaller manufacturing companies who otherwise would not be able to participate in the program. Senior design projects work on a design challenge from the industry partner and the output of their efforts is given to the participating company at the end of the two semester project. Examples of the types of manufacturing projects done for NC MEP supported companies include new or modified product designs, fixtures to improve manufacturing productivity/safety, material handling systems, automation of testing operations, sensor usage for manufacturing feedback and design improvements in production equipment.

NC MEP has a podcast called “Clocking In – Voices of NC Manufacturing”. The ISL Director, Jim Hartman, was recently a guest on Episode 17 of the podcast. He was interviewed about the NC MEP/ISL partnership and how the recent COVID-19 circumstances have affected the UNC Charlotte Engineering Senior Design Program. You can listen to the podcast here:

ISL is currently adding projects for the Fall 2021 semester. If you are a small or medium sized manufacturing company that is interested in doing a NC MEP supported engineering senior design project with UNC Charlotte, please contact the ISL Director, Jim Hartman at jim.hartman@uncc.edu.
